Micha van der Molen
Autonomous Designer
Micha van der Molen (2002) creates large-scale installations in which he questions how people relate to their environment and how that environment, often shaped by human systems and constructions, influences us in turn. He is fascinated by the absurd: situations or designs that have become so self-evident that we no longer realize how strange or uncomfortable they actually are.
Based on personal observations, such as an experience at a ticket window or a grain of sand in an earthquake zone, Micha focuses on recognizable elements that symbolize larger social issues. He takes them out of context and enlarges or reduces them. In this way, he creates a reconstruction of reality in which confusion, alienation, and wonder come together.
